Hart - Confirmed his status as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and one of the best in the world with an outstanding performance. Produced numerous superb stops throughout the game and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. The saves to deny Enrique, Skrtel and Downing were breathtaking - 9

Zabaleta - Battled down the right and won a fair few challenges but was regularly often out of position as Liverpool exploited us out wide. Enrique and Downing regularly doubled up on Zabaleta, making it extremely tough for him - 6.5

Richards - Deployed as part of a back three and then moved into central defence, and both positions completely nullified his attacking threat. Solid in the air but positionally poor, it’s clear that he’s no centre-back - 6

Savic - This just seemed one game too far for him. Anfield is a hugely imposing place and Savic was lacking in confidence. Looked overawed from the start, his distribution was appalling and his positioning not much better. Given time, he’s shown enough potential to suggest he’ll be fine, but needs taking out of the firing line for the moment - 4

Lescott - The best of our defenders. Took on the responsibility of organising and was constantly in communication with Savic and Richards. At times, he was out of position due to covering for either Kolarov or Savic, but he’s done well these past couple of games and with Kompany set to return against Everton, it should give us a more solid look - 7

Kolarov - A totally abject display. His first half performance, or rather, lack of it, was laughable. He gave the ball away constantly, didn’t track back and much of Liverpool’s threat came from his absence on the left of defence. After the break, he produced a superb assist for Dzeko’s goal and a quite marvelous 60 yard crossfield pass to Silva, but his display over 90 minutes was pathetic - 4

De Jong - Scored a peach of a strike and this was arguably his best performance since returning from injury this season. He seemed to win more tackles than normal and was more disciplined in midfield. Passing was better though could have had more urgency - 6.5

Barry - Struggled in the first half to gain a foothold in the game as Liverpool pressed high up and didn’t allow him any time on the ball. Improved after the break and kept play ticking along. Without Yaya or Milner alongside him, he could have done with getting forward more often - 6.5

Nasri - Another one who couldn’t get in the game for the first half but was more involved in the second. Interplay with Silva and Aguero was bright but lacked enough of an end product to consistently threaten - 6

Silva - Couldn’t replicated the form he showed against Spurs at the weekend but still looked the most likely to create chances. Passing was neat as per usual, but not quite as incisive as it needed to be - 7

Džeko - In the right place to score and that clearly gave him confidence, but up until that moment, he had been below par. Isolated in the first half and failed to win a single header, but benefited from Aguero’s introduction - 6

Subs

Aguero - It was a surprise to see him start on the bench, but once he came on at the break we looked more threatening. Worked hard to pressurise Liverpool’s defence but didn’t really have any clear-cut opportunities - 6

A. Johnson - Had one chance just after he was introduced, but saw Reina dive to his right to save easily - No time to mark

Dezko is a victim of our playing start. At this moment, our Barcelona style of play tries to exploit small spaces between the defenders, and with the absence of wing play much like Spurs, Dezko gets isolated.

Your comments re Aleks Kolarov were disappointingly personal and deserve a great big two fingered salute

Kolarov is very close to be called the Avatar of JO. He is anything but a DEFENDER.

          Agreed, Savic was far better.
