Should City Go For Harry Kane?

With the departure of Sergio Aguero and the unconvincing form – in a goalscoring sense, at least – of Gabriel Jesus, there is little doubt that City will dip into the transfer market for a striker this summer.

Despite playing with a fasle nine – often Kevin De Bruyne or Bernardo Silva – for several games across various competitions last season, few believe that Pep Guardiola will want to recreate that system next season. It was a magnificent effort to win the Premier League and Carabao Cup, reach the final of the Champions League and the semi-final of the FA Cup without a recognise goalscorer – given Aguero’s frequent absences and Jesus’s lack of clinical touch – but a new frontman is surely on the agenda over the next few weeks. The two names most heavily linked with City are the obvious two candidates: Harry Kane and Erling Haaland. Both would come at a cost north of £100m and both would add serious quality and threat to the side, but more noise at the moment surrounds the England man.

Kane is as close to a guarantee of Premier League success as you can get, with his record for Tottenham in recent years outstanding. If Guardiola is looking for a direct replacement for Aguero’s goals, Kane is a surefire bet to fire for City. He is experienced domestically, enjoys dropping to deep to link play and encourage runners and movers around him, and has a ruthless finishing streak that Jesus for one notably lacks. The question for City’s board and Guardiola is whether the investment required for Kane is the best option for City at the moment. He’ll be 28-year-old by the time the new season starts and has a history of injuries, most recently concerning his ankles. He may only have a couple more years at the very top level, so there will be question marks about his potential longevity and whether his fee and wages would be better spent on a younger option elsewhere.
