Pellegrini’s men to get back on track against the Swans

After almost two weeks of European Championship qualifiers, international friendly matches and the renewal of the rivalry between Scotland and England at Celtic Park, the English Premier League makes an eagerly anticipated return this weekend. This sense of anticipation is likely to be especially tangible at the Etihad Stadium, where the Blues host in-form Swansea in an afternoon kick-off on Saturday. Currently eight points behind runaway league leaders Chelsea, City need a win and a convincing performance to rejuvenate their title defence.

While the Premier League odds at Paddy Power price City at 2/5 to claim a much needed three points on Saturday, they are less generous when appraising their chances of reclaiming the EPL crown in May. The English season is notoriously long and challenging, however, and a comprehensive win against the Swans will help to put the Blues’ title efforts back on track. With the Blues’ hopes of progressing to the knock-out stages of the European Champions League hanging by a thread, this game represents an ideal opportunity to kick-start their stuttering season.

In terms of team news, Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure is almost certain to start as he his suspended for the midweek encounter with Bayern Munich at the Etihad. He is likely to lead a full strength line-up, with Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and captain Vincent Kompany also expected to feature. There are even initial reports that David Silva may have returned to fitness in time for kick-off, although he is unlikely to start given the hectic fixture schedule for the next six weeks. Either way, City will be striving for a big win and an even bigger performance as they continue to defend their title.

While Swansea may be high in confidence having beaten Arsenal at the Liberty Stadium last time out, it is hard to see them leaving Manchester with a similar result. Instead, we can expect City to put in a focused and determined performance while earning a much-needed three points.
