I agree with what you're saying about him as a player (although I think he was pivotal in the 3rd goal v qpr :)) but think with him going and micah being injured there seemed to be a lack of morale- they are (were) the two big jokers and it seemed as though a bit of the fun had gone out of the team... It was back with a vengeance against Sunderland with Micah back though!! so generally speaking I'm non-plussed about him going - it's time we all moved on!

I wrote this ten days before deadline day http://www.bitterandblue.com/2012/8/21/3257356/nigel-de-jong-transfer and I think it encapsulates who Nigel was and his problems he faced at City.

As for Nigel becoming a better player in absentia, I haven't heard that tbh.

Man City have had problems with the quality of chances they have given up but I think they are down to individual errors, not some huge, squat, bull shaped de Jong hole in the center of the park. In the PL, City have conceded the fewest shots against and the fewest shots on target against which leads me to think Man City aren't doing too much wrong. The CL is a different matter, though.

As for looking fragile defensively, this probably has more to do with our full backs being so very high up the field and our wingers drifting too far in field in order to create attacking chaos. When we lose the ball we are open to counter attacks and many of the goals conceded this term have arisen from such a scenario.

Madrid and Dortmund are two teams that accentuated this slight tactical weakness to the maximum. Why? they have the technical ability to do so, and the players to capitalize on these opportunities.

This high full back and inside wingers may be why Mancini is toying with a 3-5-2 to have an extra man at the back to cope with such counters.

We don't miss Nigel, his sale was a good one with ffp looming and an upgrade was bought in the shape of Garcia. We need a touch more tactical stability and caution from Mancini especially in Europe, not a one skill, specialized midfielder.

Players get older and slower, they need to be moved on when they still have a resale value, Garcia & Rodwell were brought in to cover and better the services NDJ had once had (neither having succeeded), and as others have pointed out NDJ did not get that much playing time. Away games in the CL would have been the ideal games for Nigel to do his stuff, but was he worth keeping for so few games. In todays modern football, players come & players go, some stick in our memories others are deleted there from.

Disagree in one part....would have been better to keep him for one more season than sell him and only get £3m for him.....for £3m we may as well have kept him. Big game player
